Keynote speaker Maria Vittoria Cicinelli, MD, FEBO, says clinicians should rethink white spot syndrome

The European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA) is holding its annual congress in Paris, France, from September 4 to 7. During the final keynote lecture of the EURETINA Congress, Maria Vittoria Cicinelli, MD, FEBO asked her colleagues to reconsider their assessments of a common inflammatory condition. She is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy. During Saturday's program, she delivered the Ophthalmologica Lecture, titled Connecting the dots: Rethinking white dots syndromes.

In her lecture Prof. Cicinelli discussed punctate inner choroidopathy and multifocal choroiditis ,some of the most common inflammatory diseases involving the photoreceptors. She demonstrated a range of these syndromes using real-world experiences with patients. "I mainly included clinical cases and clinical examples. We start from the simple, then [went] into the atypical and rare cases." As the saying goes, seeing is believing, and Prof. Cicinelli said that visuals are a deeply important aspect of understanding how white spot syndromes present. "Sometimes disease does not appear as you read in the textbook or the literature," she noted. "You have to be open, and also broaden your differential diagnoses. We have seen so many myopic patients who were misdiagnosed for myopic degeneration, but actually had inflammatory disease, and they could benefit from anti-inflammatory drugs."
